Mission
Provide equipment, supplies, planning and training to animal response teams in Pennsylvania to respond in the event of an emergency or act of terrorism.
Programs and Services
- It is not IF disaster will strike, it is WHEN disaster strikes, who will take care of the animals? The Washington County Animal Response Team (WaCART) is the county affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team (PART).
- WaCART is deployed for animal emergencies through the Washington County 911 Dispatch or PART Director. WaCART has responded to various emergency situations in which animals are in need of assistance including responses to horses stuck in barn stalls, sink holes, mud and ice, highway accidents, livestock escaped on local roads, and setting up temporary shelters for dogs and cats. WaCART is ready to respond to these large and small animal emergency situations with a fully equipped response vehicle and two response trailers. The vehicle and trailers contain technical equipment for large animal incidents and sheltering supplies for small animal responses. WaCART is ready to assist when animals are in emergency situations.
- WaCART has responded 12 times since January 1, 2023 to assist large animals. These responses include horses stuck in stalls, mud and down hillsides. WaCART has responded 3 times in the last 2 years to assist small animals. The team responded to assist residents and their companion pets that were displaced from an apartment fire in March 2024. WaCART, working with the Red Cross, set up a temporary shelter for those residents' animals.
- Due to generous donations from the 2023 Day of Giving, WaCART was able to upgrade all of the lighting on the response vehicle to assist when the team responds at night. Team members also purchased new ropes and webbing that is used during large animal responses. Our team of volunteers will continue to help animals in emergencies in Washington County and we thank you for your generous support during this year's Day of Giving.
