Category of Service: Education
Mission
The mission of the Literacy Council of Southwestern PA (LCSWPA) is to empower adults and families with literacy skills that enable them to lead successful, fulfilled lives as members of our communities.
Programs and Services
- The Literacy Council of Southwestern Pennsylvania (LCSWPA) is the only organization in our region that offers no-cost, comprehensive programming that addresses PA Humanities stated educational focus area. Through our Adult Basic Education, GED Preparatory, and English as a Second Language programs, LCSWPA facilitates literacy-focused skill development for active students. The LCSWPA deploys various instructions methods (blended, large group instruction, one-to-one instruction, virtual/hybrid instruction) to deploy the following programs:
- ABE: The LCSWPA ABE program is designed to meet the specific goals of program participants. This free, volunteer-based program provides reading, writing and math instruction to low-literacy adults aiming to improve critical skills.
- ESL: LCSWPA operates the only no-cost ESL program in our service area. Through the ESL program, quality teachers, tutors and materials are provided at no cost to program clients. The flexibility of the ESL program enables tutors to meet weekly in-person or virtually.
- GED Prep: LCSWPA provides certified tutors to support adults who are seeking to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. The GED program is designed to be accessible across our four-county service area, and students who successfully complete the preparation program are awarded vouchers to complete the equivalency exam at no-cost.
- Citizenship Preparatory Class: Free classroom instruction and learning materials are provided to those who are seeking American citizenship. The program focuses heavily on the topics that are presented in the naturalization exam and we target the speaking and language skills needed to complete the oral exam.
- Children’s Literacy Program: Provided to pre-K and grad school level children, this early literacy program focuses on vocabulary development, reading comprehension and self-expression. The CLP was developed to help eliminate the childcare barrier that potential LCSWPA students often face.
