Mission
Independence Conservancy preserves land by acquisition, easement or deed restriction to protect open space, wildlife habitat, natural and cultural resources, scenic views and quality of life in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Programs and Services
- Watershed Stewardship: Independence Conservancy leads the way for clean water and open green space in the Raccoon Creek Region of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Working in Washington, Beaver and Allegheny Counties, our volunteers have cleaned up more than 280 tons of illegally dumped trash and 25,000 tires since our founding in 1999. IC’s website hosts the Raccoon Creek Region Conservation Plan, a blueprint anyone can use to understand our precious land and water, and rich industrial history.
- Land Conservation: Independence Conservancy is a Pennsylvania land trust, working to preserve natural places for future generations. Our 99 acres of permanently protected lands include productive cropland, hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands that keep our waterways clean and preserve our rural character. Our AMD (Abandoned Mine Discharge) treatment systems in Washington and Allegheny Counties keep over 2,000 tons of pollution out of Raccoon Creek without using chemicals or electricity.
- Public Recreation: We offer the only free public access to lower Raccoon Creek for fishing, swimming, paddling, hunting and quiet enjoyment. Funded by grants from DEP, DCNR, Range Resources, Shell, Rivers of Steel, RiverWise, and the Foundation for PA Watersheds, we are building Rocky Bend Nature Preserve in the Raccoon Creek Greenway. The Preserve features walking trails along Raccoon Creek, a picnic pavilion, canoe launch, restrooms and a local industrial heritage museum.
- Community Tire Collection Program: Our Community Tire Collection Program is a convenient, effective solution for what to do with waste tires. Our 12 yearly collections have helped thousands of people in Washington, Beaver and Allegheny Counties to properly dispose of more than 62,000 unwanted tires and wheels since 2004.
- Environmental Education: Independence Conservancy conducts Land Camp, a week-long residential rustic camping experience showing young teens how “Life Depends on Land” – where do food and water come from, what happens to sewage and trash, how is electricity generated. We give technical assistance to local governments, industry, nonprofits and private citizens about AMD (Abandoned Mine Reclamation), natural stream bank restoration, riparian buffers, mitigation wetlands and invasive plant control.
